‘Von’ is the latest blackberry cultivar from the N.C. State University small fruit breeding program. A thornless floricane-fruiting blackberry, ‘Von’ was developed by Dr. Jim Ballington, Dr. Gina Fernandez and Dr. Penelope Perkins-Veazie with N.C. State’s Department of Horticultural Science.
The new blackberry underwent three years of data analysis at the Piedmont Research Station in Salisbury, N.C., performing as well or better than other varieties in postharvest tests. During the trials, ‘Von’ produced fruit late in the season and was distinct for its sweet flavor, small seeds and low acidity.
